Kitchen Fire Prevention

Across the United States, house fires start in the kitchen more often — almost half the time, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) — than anywhere else in the home. The leading cause of kitchen fires is unattended cooking. It happens in North Kitsap, too. You can read about some kitchen fires in the area on our Press Releases page.  Search for these dates:  November 6, 2019; February 5, 2019; July 14, 2017;  January 7, 2017; and February 20, 2016.

October 4 – 10, 2020 is National Fire Prevention Week and this year’s theme focuses on preventing kitchen fires: “Serve up fire safety in the kitchen!”  Learn more about the origins of National Fire Prevention Week, and watch a video about the incident that inspired it — the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

Find more info about kitchen fire safety at the NFPA’s Fire Prevention Week 2020 page.

And don’t forget to make sure you’ve got enough working smoke alarms, and have planned and practiced your family’s fire escape!
