MORE FIREWORKS INCIDENTS ...

(KINGSTON, Kitsap County) -- Crews used 500 gallons of firefighting foam to extinguish a cliff fire -- apparently sparked by illegal fireworks -- here last evening.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue personnel were called to the 100' bank between 3rd and 4th Streets along Washington Boulevard just before midnight. A nearby homeowner spotted 15' flames coming up the cliff, called 911 and attempted to snuff the fire with a garden hose. Upon crews' arrival, the blaze was nearly out. Firefighters were able to finish the job by spraying foam from atop the cliff onto the site. The man told crews that he believed the fire was started when a bottle rocket landed in blackberry bushes, stating that a group of young people had been setting off fireworks from the beach below throughout the evening.

In Kitsap County, it is illegal to discharge fireworks except between the hours of 11:00am and 11:00pm on Independence Day. Bottle rockets and most other flying fireworks, available at area tribal fireworks stands, are prohibited off the reservations.

(SUQUAMISH, Kitsap County) -- A 16 year-old male suffered serious burns to his hand this morning in a mishap at one of the fireworks stands here.

The youth walked to North Kitsap Fire & Rescue's Suquamish fire station, seeking treatment. He told medics that, while working at one of the fireworks stands, he and a 15 year-old friend had been igniting piles of flash powder when one exploded more violently than expected. In extreme pain, the young man sustained deep second-degree burns to one hand and was transported to Bremerton's Harrison Memorial Hospital.
