April 8, 2002 DISCARDED CIGARETTE SPARKS TRAILER FIRE(SUQUAMISH, Kitsap County) -- A lit cigarette is apparently to blame in a fire that destroyed a travel trailer here this morning. North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to a Geneva Street address shortly after 11:00am after a resident noticed smoke coming from the trailer, and called 911. Although bystanders attempted to control the flames with garden hoses, the trailer was fully-involved in fire when firefighters arrived at the scene. A woman at the residence told crews that she'd been in an adjacent trailer earlier that morning. While there, the woman said, she'd flicked a burning cigarette out of the adjacent trailer's window. Because the trailer that burned -- situated just five feet away -- had its windows removed, the woman believes that the lit cigarette most likely landed in piles of debris inside and sparked the blaze. The fourteen-foot trailer, apparently used only for storage, was destroyed. The adjacent twenty-foot trailer, the residence of an adult who wasn't inside at the time of the blaze, suffered heat damage to its windows and siding. |
