BUSY NIGHT FOR NORTH-END EMERGENCY CREWS; ONE AIRLIFTED

Crews from as far away as Bainbridge Island and Central Kitsap were called in to help handle an unusually high number of emergency calls in the north-end on Friday night; multiple patients were transported to area hospitals in unrelated incidents involving drug and alcohol overdoses, apparent domestic violence and car crashes; one man was airlifted to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center following a one-car collision with a power pole on Sandy Hook Road.

In that incident, Poulsbo Fire Department and North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were called to the Evergreen Mini-Mart on SR 305 at 1:06am after an employee there called 911 to report that a bleeding man had come to the store asking for help in the wake of a car crash nearby. Although an aid unit and fire engine were available to respond, all north-end paramedic units were already engaged at other incidents. A medic unit from Bainbridge Island was called in. The man -- the driver in the crash -- guided crews to the crash site on Sandy Hood Road where his older full-sized sedan was totalled in its collision with the power pole. His passenger, a man of about the same age, remained in the car and was semi-conscious. The driver, who sustained a laceration on his nose but declined medical transport, told crews that neither he nor the passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The passenger was airlifted with a decreased level of consciousness and possible multiple injuries. The Washington State Patrol investigated the cause of the incident.
