FLUKE STORM SLICKENS NK ROADS
(KINGSTON, Kitsap County) -- Up to two inches of hail fell within minutes
this afternoon on the higher elevations surrounding this town, causing cars to slide off
roadways.
Shortly
before 3:00pm, North Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched to multiple car
crashes along West Kingston and Miller Bay Roads -- the apparent focus of the hail storm. Crews responding to the incidents from NKF&R's
Suquamish station reported clear roadways and sunshine in the vicinity of that town. Only one of the crashes resulted in injuries.
A
brand new Dodge Ram pick-up, traveling southbound on Miller Bay Road about 1/2 mile south
of its intersection with West Kingston Road, was struck in the driver's side door by an
older Landcruiser when that southbound vehicle lost control on the hail-covered roadway. The Landcruiser, driven by a young woman from
Indianola, landed off the roadway and down a small embankment. The 17 year-old driver was taken to Bremerton's
Harrison Memorial Hospital with possible head injuries, suffered when she struck the car's
steering wheel. Firefighters believe she was
not wearing a seatbelt. The Landcruiser's
passenger, a 17 year-old Kingston male, denied any injuries. The one-ton pick-up carried a couple from
Kingston. Firefighters used hydraulic
extrication equipment to remove the truck's door and free the couple. Both of the truck's occupants benefited from the
protection of airbags and lap/shoulder belts, but were transported to Harrison with
possible minor injuries.
